Research indicated that development at the Beyers Naude Square dates back from the very origins of Johannesburg in 1886 with the first buildings defining the square being constructed as early as 1895. The square was used as an important marketplace up to 1913 when these activities were moved to Newtown to create space for the construction of the buildings now known as the Museum Africa and the Market Theatre. The City Hall opened in 1915, and the central library opened in 1935. SPOOR was appointed by the Architect on the Project (MDCC Architects) to develop the Planting Plan for the planting areas at the square. Typical to many landscape projects the project instruction included a solution for a low budget and low to no maintenance landscape planting design. SPOOR is satisfied that this has been achieved and the Johannesburg Development Agency has expressed their satisfaction to this extent to MDCC Architects.
