Beyers Naude Square Landscape Development, Johannesburg Gauteng

Research has indicated that development at the Beyers Naude Square dates back to the very origins of Johannesburg in 1886, with the first buildings defining the square being constructed as early as 1895.

The square was used as a vital marketplace up to 1913 when these activities were moved to Newtown to create space for the construction of the buildings now known as the Museum Africa and the Market Theatre: the City Hall, which opened in 1915, and the central library, opened in 1935.

The Architects appointed SPOOR on the Project (MDCC Architects) to develop the Planting Plan for the planting areas at the square. As is the case with many landscape projects, the project instruction included finding a solution for a low-budget and low- to no-maintenance landscape planting design. SPOOR is satisfied that this has been achieved and the Johannesburg Development Agency has expressed their satisfaction to MDCC Architects.
