The University of the Witwatersrand has a long history as a quality tertiary education institution in South Africa. As part of their success the University is in a constant process of expanding their facilities to accommodate their academic services as well as their administrative services. SPOOR assisted the University as part of a professional team to assess a section of the University properties to be able to understand the environmental sensitivity of these and to develop the related environmental management procedures where this is relevant. As part of this process the local provincial environmental authority was also invited to comment on the findings and to present their own environmental management requirements where they felt it necessary. The provincial environmental authority has accepted the risk assessment and the environmental management programme, and the properties are managed accordingly.
