SPOOR had the privilege of assisting the ALUF Farming company in the Marquard Area of the Free State to expand their current cattle and sheep feedlot facilities. The growth of the existing feedlot activities grew so quickly that it necessitated an environmental application in terms of the NEMA regulations.

The Applicant planned the facilities in a way that it did not require clearing virgin grassveld on the farm by upgrading the existing kraal families and sacrificing a section of an existing grain field to construct a new feedlot. In addition to the above an onsite small-scale water treatment facility was planned to manage the stormwater origination from within the feedlots responsibly. The treated stormwater can now be used as fertilizer on the grainfields which reduces the Farmer’s fertilizer needs, albeit to a small degree. This increases the optimum use of the farms resources whilst simultaneously protecting the surface water resources on the farm and downstream water bodies. The project is currently in the final stages of review at the Free State DESTEA and as with our other applications, SPOOR expects the environmental authorization shortly.
